Why ‘Little By Little’ Films?
When Ludwig van Beethoven was losing his hearing he also faced losing the cornerstone of his life: music. He battled feelings of devastation and depression, and eventually lost his hearing completely. Legend has it that, as he learned to live without his hearing, Beethoven felt a glimmer of hope and added a written instruction to his composition Piano Sonata No. 31 in A♭ major, Op. 110: ‘Poi a poi di nuovo vivente’. ‘Little by little returning to life’.
Little By Little Films’ founder Lindsey Dryden was inspired to make her first feature documentary Lost and Sound (SXSW, 2012) when facing the threat of her own hearing loss. Beethoven’s hopeful annotation on Op. 110 seemed a fitting name for her new company.
You can listen to Piano Sonata No. 31 in A♭ major, Op. 110, performed by the greatest pianist of all time, Alfred Brendel, here.
